Ernest Shackleton

Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish polar explorer, a leading figure of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Born in County Kildare, he entered the merchant marine as a teenager. He served on Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery expedition (1901–1904), then led the Nimrod expedition (1907–1909), whose team reached a farthest-south record and climbed toward the Pole before turning back. His best-known venture, the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914–1917), saw the ship Endurance crushed by pack ice; Shackleton led his crew across ice and open sea to safety without loss of life. He died of heart failure at Grytviken, South Georgia, and is buried there.
