Gustave Flaubert

1821 CE1880 CE · Novelist · Rouen

Gustave Flaubert was a French novelist, widely regarded as a central figure of literary realism. Born in Rouen in 1821 to a surgeon's family, he studied law in Paris before abandoning it after a nervous illness to devote himself to writing. He settled at Croisset, near Rouen, where he composed most of his work in prolonged solitude, pursuing an exacting ideal of prose style. His major works include Madame Bovary (1857), whose publication prompted a trial on charges of immorality, Salammbo (1862), Sentimental Education (1869), The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1874), and Three Tales (1877). He died at Croisset in 1880.
