Karl Marx
1818 CE–1883 CE · Philosopher · Trier
Karl Marx was a German-born philosopher, political economist, and journalist. Born in Trier in the Kingdom of Prussia, he studied law and philosophy at Bonn and Berlin, completing a doctorate in 1841. After his newspaper work was suppressed, he lived in exile in Paris, Brussels, and, from 1849, London. With Friedrich Engels he wrote The Communist Manifesto (1848); his major work, Das Kapital, analyzed capitalist economies. He developed historical materialism, a framework treating economic production and class relations as drivers of social change. His writings shaped later socialist, communist, and labor movements, as well as academic economics, sociology, and history.
