Abdulmecid I
1823 CE–1861 CE · Constantinople
Abdulmecid I was an Ottoman ruler who launched the Tanzimat era of reform with the Gülhane edict of 1839, which promised legal and administrative modernization and greater equality among the empire's subjects. His reign included the Crimean War (1853–1856), in which the Ottomans, allied with Britain and France, fought Russia. He died in 1861.
