Victor Emmanuel II
1820 CE–1878 CE · Rome, Italy
Victor Emmanuel II was King of Sardinia-Piedmont from 1849 and became the first king of a unified Italy in 1861, reigning until his death in 1878. Working with his prime minister Camillo Cavour and the campaigns of Giuseppe Garibaldi, he presided over the process of Italian unification known as the Risorgimento. During his reign the new kingdom completed its territorial consolidation, annexing Venetia in 1866 and Rome in 1870, which became the capital. He was succeeded by his son, Umberto I.
