1888 CE–1972 CE · Hasidic · Vizhnitz (Vyzhnytsia)
R. Chaim Meir Hager (1888-1972), the Imrei Chaim of Vizhnitz, was the figure who reestablished Vizhnitz Hasidism in Israel after the Holocaust. Born in Vizhnitz (Vyzhnytsia, Bukovina), he served his father R. Yisrael Hager (the Ahavas Yisrael) and then his brother R. Eliezer; he himself was Rebbe in Grosswardein (Oradea) during the destruction of Hungarian Jewry. After the war he settled in Tel Aviv and in 1949 founded Kiryat Vizhnitz in Bnei Brak, which became the largest Hasidic community in Israel and the global Vizhnitz center. His Imrei Chaim discourses are foundational for the Vizhnitz Hasidic canon.
