Yosef Shalom Elyashiv

1910 CE2012 CE · Modern · Lithuania

R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910–2012) was a leading Litvish halakhic authority of the twentieth century, based in Jerusalem. Born in Šiauliai, Lithuania, he studied at the Slabodka Yeshiva and later became rosh yeshiva and a revered posek consulted on matters of Jewish law throughout the diaspora. Elyashiv was known for his extraordinary erudition in Talmud and halakhic sources and for his careful, principled approach to ruling on contemporary issues. His Torah rulings were recorded by his students in the multi-volume He'arot and Kovetz Teshuvot, and he served as a spiritual leader to the non-Hasidic Lithuanian yeshiva world until his death at 102. His decisions shaped modern Orthodox practice on kashrut, Shabbat, and numerous questions of applied Jewish law.
