Ashikaga Takauji

Ashikaga Takauji was a warrior commander who first served the Kamakura shogunate, then defected to support Emperor Go-Daigo's Kenmu Restoration in 1333. When the restoration alienated the samurai, he turned against the emperor, installed a rival to the throne, and in 1338 took the title of shogun, founding the Ashikaga (Muromachi) shogunate. His seizure of power opened the divided Nanboku-cho era of competing Northern and Southern courts.
