Orhan
1281 CE–1362 CE · Bursa
Orhan was the second ruler of the Ottoman dynasty, succeeding his father Osman I around 1323–1324. He expanded the young Ottoman state across northwestern Anatolia, capturing Bursa, which became an early capital, as well as Nicaea and Nicomedia. Through intervention in Byzantine civil wars he secured the first permanent Ottoman foothold in Europe at Gallipoli. He developed early Ottoman institutions and died in 1362.
