Aurangzeb
1618 CE–1707 CE · Shahjahanabad (Delhi)
Aurangzeb (reigned 1658-1707) was the sixth Mughal emperor, who took the throne after a war of succession among the sons of Shah Jahan. During his long reign the empire expanded to its greatest territorial extent, largely through prolonged campaigns in the Deccan of southern India. A strict administrator, he reversed several tolerationist policies of his predecessors, reimposing the tax on non-Muslims. The heavy cost of continuous warfare and the strain of governing so vast a realm contributed to the decline that followed his death.
