John Locke

1632 CE1704 CE · Philosopher · Wrington, Somerset

John Locke was an English philosopher and physician whose work shaped modern empiricism (the view that knowledge derives from experience rather than innate ideas) and liberal political thought. In An Essay Concerning Human Understanding he argued the mind begins as a blank slate filled by sensation and reflection. In Two Treatises of Government he grounded legitimate authority in consent and natural rights to life, liberty, and property. His Letter Concerning Toleration argued for separating civil government from religious enforcement. Trained in medicine at Oxford, he served the household of the Earl of Shaftesbury, spent years in exile in the Dutch Republic, and returned after 1688.
