Louis XIV became king of France in 1643 as a child and ruled personally from 1661 until 1715, one of the longest reigns in European history. Known as the 'Sun King,' he embodied absolute monarchy, centralizing power and famously building the grand palace of Versailles, where he gathered the nobility around his court. He fought a series of wars to extend French borders and patronized the arts, making France the dominant power of Europe. His revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 drove many French Protestants into exile.
