Po'pay (Popé)

Po'pay was a Tewa religious leader from Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan Pueblo) in present-day New Mexico. After Spanish authorities arrested and punished Pueblo religious practitioners, he helped coordinate the many independent Pueblo communities into the unified uprising of August 1680 known as the Pueblo Revolt. The revolt drove Spanish colonists out of New Mexico and kept the region free of colonial rule for roughly twelve years, one of the most successful Indigenous resistance movements in North American history. He died around 1692, as Spanish forces were returning to the region.
