Alexis I

Alexis I (1629–1676) was the second Romanov tsar, ruling from 1645. His reign produced the Sobornoye Ulozheniye, the comprehensive law code of 1649 that among other measures entrenched serfdom, and saw the annexation of Smolensk and left-bank Ukraine following war with Poland-Lithuania and the 1654 agreement with the Cossacks. His reign also witnessed the great schism in the Russian Orthodox Church, brought on by the liturgical reforms of Patriarch Nikon, which split off the Old Believers. He suppressed several major uprisings, including the Cossack and peasant revolt led by Stenka Razin.
