Feodor III
1661 CE–1682 CE · Moscow
Feodor III (1661–1682) was Tsar of Russia from 1676, the eldest surviving son of Alexis I. Though frequently ill, during his short reign he abolished the mestnichestvo system in 1682, which had assigned government and military appointments by hereditary rank rather than merit. He also supported education, and the Slavic Greek Latin Academy in Moscow was established around this period. He died childless in 1682 and was succeeded jointly by his brothers Ivan V and the young Peter I, whose accession soon triggered a power struggle and revolt.
