Shah Jahan
1592 CE–1666 CE · Shahjahanabad (Delhi)
Shah Jahan (reigned 1628-1658) was the fifth Mughal emperor, under whom Mughal architecture reached its peak. He is best known for commissioning the Taj Mahal at Agra as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, along with the Red Fort and Jama Masjid at his new capital of Shahjahanabad (Delhi). His reign was a period of great wealth and building, though costly campaigns strained the treasury. He was deposed and imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in 1658 and spent his final years in confinement at Agra.
