Pope Bl. Innocent V
1225 CE–1276 CE · Tarentaise (Savoy)
Born Pierre de Tarentaise in Savoy, Innocent V was the first Dominican to become pope. A noted theologian and contemporary of Thomas Aquinas, he taught at Paris and served as provincial of his order and Archbishop of Lyon before becoming Cardinal Bishop of Ostia. He helped organize the Second Council of Lyon. Elected in January 1276, his pontificate lasted barely five months. He worked to secure peace between Charles of Anjou and the Italian cities and to consolidate the fragile Greek reunion before dying in Rome. He was beatified in 1898.
