Pope Martin IV
1210 CE–1285 CE · Tours
Born Simon de Brion in France, Martin IV had served as chancellor of France and cardinal-legate before his election, which Charles of Anjou heavily influenced. As pope he was largely subservient to Charles's interests, a partisanship that proved costly. He excommunicated the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos, shattering the Greek reunion achieved at Lyon. When the Sicilian Vespers (1282) drove the French from Sicily, his furious excommunications and a failed crusade against Aragon damaged papal prestige. Unable to reside securely in Rome, he governed mostly from Orvieto and died at Perugia. Dante placed him in Purgatory among the gluttonous.
