Ahmad Sanjar
1086 CE–1157 CE · Merv
Ahmad Sanjar was the last sultan to rule over a united Great Seljuk Empire, having governed Khorasan as a regional king from the 1090s before becoming supreme sultan in 1118. His long reign combined cultural patronage with mounting external pressure, including his defeat by the Kara-Khitai at the Battle of Qatwan in 1141. In 1153 he was captured by rebellious Oghuz Turkomen and held for several years. His death in 1157 was followed by the effective collapse of the Great Seljuk state.
