Constantine XI Palaiologos
1405 CE–1453 CE · Constantinople
Constantine XI Palaiologos became the last Byzantine emperor in 1449, ruling a much-diminished realm centered on Constantinople. He appealed for Western aid and prepared the city's defenses against the growing power of the Ottomans. In May 1453 Sultan Mehmed II's army besieged and stormed Constantinople, and Constantine died in its final defense. His death ended the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire, whose line reached back over a thousand years to ancient Rome.
