Bayezid II
1447 CE–1512 CE · Constantinople
Bayezid II was an Ottoman ruler (reigned 1481–1512) who stabilized the empire following the reign of his father, Mehmed II the Conqueror. Early in his reign he organized the reception and resettlement of large numbers of Sephardi Jews expelled from Spain in 1492, issuing orders that they be admitted and welcomed into Ottoman territory. His reign also saw wars with the Mamluks and Venice and the early rise of the rival Safavid movement to the east. He abdicated in 1512 in favor of his son Selim I and died soon after.
