Itzcoatl
?–1440 CE · Tenochtitlan
Itzcoatl was the fourth tlatoani of Tenochtitlan, ruling from 1427 to 1440, and is often called the true founder of the Aztec empire. Allying with Nezahualcoyotl of Texcoco, he overthrew the Tepanec power of Azcapotzalco in 1428 and joined Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan in the Triple Alliance that would dominate central Mexico. With his adviser Tlacaelel he reorganized the Mexica state and reshaped its official history, launching its imperial expansion.
