Fra Angelico

Fra Angelico, born Guido di Pietro, was an Early Renaissance painter of the Florentine school who entered the Dominican order and took the name Fra Giovanni da Fiesole. He worked chiefly on religious subjects — altarpieces, panel paintings, and frescoes — combining Gothic devotional traditions with the new perspective and naturalism of his era. His best-known works include the fresco cycle for the convent of San Marco in Florence and the Niccoline Chapel (chapel of Pope Nicholas V) at the Vatican. He also contributed to the cathedral of Orvieto and served for a period as prior of San Domenico di Fiesole (c. 1450–1452). He died in Rome in 1455. In 1982 Pope John Paul II beatified him, and he is regarded as a patron of artists.
