Moctezuma I (Ilhuicamina)

Moctezuma I, called Ilhuicamina ('he shoots arrows at the sky') and also known as Moctezuma the Elder to distinguish him from his later namesake, was the fifth tlatoani of Tenochtitlan, ruling the Mexica from 1440 to 1469. With his adviser Tlacaelel he reshaped Mexica law, religion, and administration and, building on the Triple Alliance with Texcoco and Tlacopan, carried Mexica conquests beyond the Valley of Mexico for the first time. He also confronted the great famine of the 1450s, laying the foundations of the empire his successors would enlarge.
