Pope Callixtus III
1378 CE–1458 CE · Jativa (Xativa)
Born Alfonso de Borja near Valencia, Callixtus III was the first Borgia pope and a distinguished canon lawyer who had served the kings of Aragon and helped end the lingering schism. Elderly when elected, he devoted his brief reign overwhelmingly to organizing a crusade against the Ottomans after the fall of Constantinople, raising funds and fleets; the Christian victory at the 1456 Siege of Belgrade was a notable result. He ordered a review that contributed to the eventual rehabilitation of Joan of Arc. He is also remembered, more critically, for advancing his nephews—including the future Alexander VI—launching the Borgia family's rise to power.
