Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was a German philosopher and a central figure of German idealism, the early-19th-century movement holding that reality is fundamentally shaped by mind or reason. Educated for the Lutheran ministry at Tubingen, he turned to philosophy, working as a tutor and newspaper editor before securing university posts. His major works include the Phenomenology of Spirit, the Science of Logic, and the Elements of the Philosophy of Right. He developed a dialectical method tracing how concepts unfold through internal tension toward fuller understanding, and applied it to logic, history, art, religion, and the state. From 1818 he taught in Berlin, where his lectures drew a wide following until his death in 1831.
