Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru (1889–1964) was the first Prime Minister of independent India, serving from 1947 until his death in 1964. A leading figure in the Indian National Congress and the independence movement, he was imprisoned several times under British rule. As prime minister he promoted parliamentary democracy, state-led industrial and economic planning, and a foreign policy of nonalignment during the Cold War. He remains a central figure in the founding of the modern Indian state.
