George Orwell

George Orwell was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, an English novelist, essayist, and journalist born in Motihari, British India, in 1903. Educated at Eton, he served in the Imperial Police in Burma before returning to Europe, where he lived among the poor in Paris and London and later fought in the Spanish Civil War. His reportage and essays addressed poverty, imperialism, and political language, while his novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) examined totalitarian power. He described his outlook as democratic socialism. He died of tuberculosis in London in 1950 at the age of 46.
