Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th President, serving from 1953 to 1961 as a Republican. As Supreme Allied Commander in World War II, he had directed the Allied invasion of Western Europe. As President he signed the legislation creating the Interstate Highway System and established NASA following the launch of Sputnik.
