Ho Chi Minh (1890–1969) was a Vietnamese revolutionary and political leader who led the movement for Vietnamese independence from French colonial rule. He founded the Viet Minh and declared the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945, serving as its first president. He led North Vietnam through the First Indochina War against France and the early years of the war against South Vietnam and the United States. He died in 1969, before the conflict's end, and the former Saigon was later renamed Ho Chi Minh City.
