Igor Stravinsky
1882 CE–1971 CE · Composer · Oranienbaum (now Lomonosov)
Igor Stravinsky was a Russian-born composer, pianist, and conductor whose career spanned more than six decades and three national homes. Trained privately under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg, he rose to prominence through ballets written for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris — The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring, whose 1913 premiere provoked a celebrated disturbance. After years in Switzerland and France, he emigrated to the United States in 1939. His output moved through Russian, neoclassical, and serial idioms. He took French citizenship in 1934 and American citizenship in 1945, and died in New York in 1971.
