David Ben-Gurion

David Ben-Gurion (1886–1973) was the principal founder and first Prime Minister of the State of Israel. On 14 May 1948 he proclaimed the establishment of the state and was a signatory of its Declaration of Independence. He served as prime minister and minister of defence from 1948 to 1963, with a break between 1953 and 1955, and oversaw the formation of the Israel Defense Forces and the institutions of the new state. He retired from politics in the late 1960s and died in 1973.
