Le Corbusier
1887 CE–1965 CE · Architect · La Chaux-de-Fonds
Le Corbusier, born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, was a Swiss-French architect, urban planner, painter, and writer, and one of the principal figures of modernist architecture. Trained first as an engraver in La Chaux-de-Fonds, he adopted the name "Le Corbusier" around 1920 and settled in Paris. He formulated the "Five Points" of a new architecture and the Modulor proportional system, articulated in works such as Vers une architecture (1923). His buildings include the Villa Savoye, the Unité d'Habitation in Marseille, the chapel at Ronchamp, and the planned city of Chandigarh, India. His urban proposals and wartime associations remain debated among historians.
