1915 CE–1947 CE · Yangon (Rangoon)
Aung San (1915–1947) was a Burmese independence leader who is regarded as a founding figure of modern Burma. He helped organize the Burmese nationalist movement and its early army, and after the Second World War he negotiated with Britain for Burmese independence. He headed the interim government in 1946–47 and concluded agreements toward independence and national unity. He was assassinated along with several colleagues in July 1947, months before Burma became independent.
