Bertolt Brecht

Bertolt Brecht (born Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht) was a German playwright, poet, and theatre director. After early work in Munich and a rise to prominence in 1920s Berlin, he developed the theory and practice of "epic theatre," using devices intended to prompt critical distance rather than emotional absorption. His works include The Threepenny Opera, Mother Courage and Her Children, The Life of Galileo, and The Caucasian Chalk Circle. A committed Marxist, he fled Germany in 1933 and spent years of exile in Denmark, Scandinavia, and the United States. In 1949 he settled in East Berlin, where he founded and led the Berliner Ensemble until his death in 1956.
