Karim Khan Zand
1705 CE–1779 CE · Shiraz
Karim Khan Zand (c. 1705–1779) rose to power amid the turmoil after Nader Shah's death and came to rule most of Iran from his capital at Shiraz. Notably, he declined the title of shah, styling himself Vakil e-Ra'aya, 'Deputy of the People.' His reign is remembered for a rare interval of peace, stability, and prosperity, and for the public buildings and bazaar with which he beautified Shiraz.
