Ivan VI
1740 CE–1764 CE · St. Petersburg
Ivan VI (1740–1764) was proclaimed Emperor of Russia in October 1740 when he was only two months old, with his mother Anna Leopoldovna and others acting as regents. In December 1741 he was deposed in a palace coup led by Elizabeth, a daughter of Peter the Great. He spent the rest of his short life in confinement, held in strict secrecy and isolation. In 1764 he was killed by his guards during a failed attempt by others to free him and restore him to the throne.
