Qianlong Emperor
1711 CE–1799 CE · Beijing
The Qianlong Emperor reigned from 1735 to 1796, presiding over the Qing dynasty at its territorial and cultural height. His 'Ten Great Campaigns' expanded the empire, notably incorporating the Xinjiang region. A devoted patron of the arts and letters, he ordered the compilation of the immense Siku Quanshu literary collection. His later reign, however, was marked by court corruption under the favorite Heshen and growing fiscal and administrative strain; he abdicated in 1796 out of filial deference.
