Maria Theresa

Maria Theresa ruled the Habsburg dominions, including Austria, Hungary, and Bohemia, from 1740 until her death in 1780, the only woman to hold the position in her own right. Her accession was contested in the War of the Austrian Succession, during which she lost the province of Silesia to Prussia. Over her long reign she carried out extensive administrative, military, financial, and educational reforms that strengthened the Habsburg state. Her husband and later her son held the title of Holy Roman Emperor, while she remained the effective ruler of the hereditary lands.
