Peter III

Peter III (1728–1762) was Emperor of Russia for about six months in 1762, a grandson of Peter the Great raised in Germany. Shortly after taking the throne he withdrew Russia from the Seven Years' War, abruptly making peace with Prussia, a reversal that angered much of the military and court. He also issued a manifesto freeing the nobility from compulsory state service. He was overthrown in a coup led by his wife, who became Catherine II, and died soon afterward in custody under disputed circumstances.
