Charles III of Spain

Charles III was King of Spain from 1759 until his death in 1788, having previously ruled as King of Naples and Sicily from 1735. A leading representative of enlightened absolutism, he undertook wide-ranging reforms of the Spanish state, economy, and administration, and worked to modernize Madrid and the empire. He expelled the Jesuits from Spanish territories in 1767 and pursued policies aimed at strengthening royal authority and improving public works. He was succeeded by his son, Charles IV.
