Hyder Ali
1720 CE–1782 CE · Srirangapatna
Hyder Ali (c. 1720–1782) was a military commander who became the de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in southern India around 1761. He built a modernized, European-influenced army and expanded Mysore's territory, coming into repeated conflict with the British East India Company. He fought the First and Second Anglo-Mysore Wars, at times allied with the French and other Indian powers. He died in 1782 during the Second Anglo-Mysore War and was succeeded by his son Tipu Sultan.
