Frederick the Great
1712 CE–1786 CE · Potsdam (Prussia)
Frederick the Great became king of Prussia in 1740 and turned it into a leading European power. A bold military commander, he seized Silesia from Austria and defended his gains through the grueling Seven Years' War (1756–1763). An advocate of Enlightenment ideas, he reformed the law and administration, promoted religious toleration, and corresponded with philosophers such as Voltaire while composing music and writing. His reign left Prussia a great power and helped set the stage for later German unification.
