Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian-born painter and art theorist regarded as a pioneer of abstract art. Trained first in law and economics at the University of Moscow, he turned to painting in 1896 and moved to Munich, where he co-founded the Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) group and wrote "Concerning the Spiritual in Art." He returned to Russia during the First World War, then taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Dessau, and finally Berlin, which the Nazis forced to close in 1933. In 1933 he settled at Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, and took French citizenship in 1939. His work moved progressively from representation toward pure color, line, and form.
