Franz Kafka
1883 CE–1924 CE · Writer · Prague
Franz Kafka was a German-language writer born in Prague, then part of Austria-Hungary. Trained in law, he spent most of his working life as an official at a workers' accident insurance institute, writing at night. During his lifetime he published only short prose, including "The Metamorphosis" and "In the Penal Colony." His three unfinished novels, "The Trial," "The Castle," and "Amerika," were published posthumously by his friend Max Brod, who disregarded Kafka's instruction to burn the manuscripts. His work depicts individuals confronting opaque, inaccessible authority and bureaucratic systems. Kafka died of laryngeal tuberculosis in 1924 at a sanatorium near Vienna.
