H. G. Wells

Herbert George Wells was an English writer born in Bromley, Kent, in 1866 to a shopkeeper and a housekeeper. After apprenticeships in drapery, he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in South Kensington, studying biology under T. H. Huxley. He turned to writing and produced early scientific romances including The Time Machine (1895), The War of the Worlds (1898), and The Invisible Man, works widely regarded as foundational to science fiction. He also wrote social novels such as Kipps and Tono-Bungay, and later histories, essays, and works of political and utopian speculation. He died in London in 1946.
