Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon Bonaparte rose as a general during the French Revolution and seized power in a coup in 1799, crowning himself Emperor of the French in 1804. Through a series of wars he came to dominate much of continental Europe, while at home he enacted lasting reforms, most notably the Napoleonic Code that shaped legal systems worldwide. His disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812 broke his power, and he was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He died in exile on the island of Saint Helena in 1821.
