Jane Austen was an English novelist whose six major works — Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, and the posthumously published Northanger Abbey and Persuasion — depict the domestic lives and marriage prospects of the English landed gentry. The daughter of a country clergyman, she spent her early years at Steventon rectory in Hampshire, wrote steadily from adolescence, and published anonymously during her lifetime, her authorship known only within a small circle. Her novels are marked by irony, free indirect discourse, and close social observation. She died at 41 in Winchester and was buried in the cathedral there.
