Andrianampoinimerina

Andrianampoinimerina came to power in the central highlands of Madagascar around 1787 and reunified the divided kingdom of Imerina through both warfare and diplomacy. From his stronghold at Ambohimanga he extended Merina authority over neighboring peoples and reorganized administration, land, and markets while promoting rice agriculture and irrigation. He is credited with articulating the ambition to unite the whole island under Merina rule. His work laid the foundation for the expansion carried out by his son Radama I after 1810.
