Charles X
1757 CE–1836 CE · Paris
Charles X was King of France from 1824 until 1830, the last of the elder Bourbon line to rule France. A brother of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, he pursued conservative and clerical policies that alienated much of the political nation. His attempt in July 1830 to restrict the press and the franchise by decree provoked the July Revolution, which forced his abdication and exile. He was succeeded by his kinsman Louis-Philippe, and he died in exile in 1836.
